Ankle dorsiflexion in my opinion is one of the more crucial assessments for basketball players. More importantly however, it how exactly we measure ankle dorsiflexion. Non-weightbearing and weightbearing DF assessments are equally as important but then understanding where the restriction is needs to play a larger role. Often times with ankle sprains I have seen positional faults of the distal fibula causing decreased ankle DF. In this article, Art Horne explains some of the evidence behind that as well as how Mulligan techniques can help. Check it out here and next time you see ankle dorsiflexion restriction consider a positional fault vs soft tissue playing a role.
