However, there are indeed certain situations with specific pathologies that warrant modality usage. John Snyder at orthopedicmanualpt.com recently did a literature review on the use of NMES for strengthening, especially following surgery. In the article, Snyder reviews the research behind weakness following surgery and studies performed showing strength gains with NMES + exercise.
